Northern Finland Biobank Borealis supports research that promotes public health and wellbeing, as well as the development of healthcare products and treatment practices. Our research areas include promoting population health, identifying factors that influence disease mechanisms, and preventing illnesses.

Biobank Borealis is jointly owned by the Wellbeing Services County of North Ostrobothnia (Pohde), University of Oulu, Nordlab, Wellbeing Services County of Lapland (Lapha), Wellbeing Services County of Kainuu, and the Wellbeing Services County of Central Ostrobothnia (Soite).

For researchers

How can Biobanks facilitate scientific research?

Biobanks are key resources for unravelling the molecular basis of disease subtypes, identification of new therapeutic targets and biomarkers; all of which lead to personalized healthcare and more effective treatment strategies via translational medical research. Samples for clinical studies and diagnostic purposes have been collected throughout the history of medicine, but in the biobank concept, defined by the Biobank Act (688/2012), the collected samples can be used for a variety of future research needs, not just for a defined specific research purpose as previously.

Therefore, the sample collections in biobanks enable a broader use of the material and researcher do not need to set up laborous sample collections themselves if the material is already available in biobanks. Furthermore, the new research results are obliged to be returned to the biobank that further enriches its data set. Via the network of Finnish biobanks large enough sample sets even for the studies for rare diseases can be obtained.

Fingenious® – Your Gateway to Finnish Biobanks and Biomedical Research

The Fingenious® service offers access to Finnish biobank samples, data, study participants and expertise. The purpose of the service is to benefit biomedical research by serving academic researchers and researchers from various industries such as the pharmaceutical industry nationally and internationally.

One-stop Access Service

Only one contract and one service provider, but biospecimen, biodata and study participant recruitment from all the public biobanks in Finland. The Fingenious® service enables research to be conducted smoothly and faster. We provide researchers with a one-stop service for feasibility studies, sample and data requests, study coordination, and contract services. We also help you choose the right partners and experts needed.

  • The Fingenious service provides a view to Finnish public biobank data.
  • The service makes it possible to find the right study participants for the study with the help of a unique recruit service.
  • The Fingenious service saves researchers time and resources by automating and standardizing searches of Finnish biobank data. Working with us speeds up the search and compilation of materials and data.

The Fingenious® Service is provided by Finnish Biobank Cooperative (FINBB). The mission of FINBB is to enhance the competitiveness of Finnish health and biomedical research by providing researchers a centralized access to collections and services of the Finnish biobanks and their background organizations.  FINBB is a cooperative owned by the six largest hospital districts and universities in Finland, and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

For the public

Research using biobank samples helps to develop better and more personalised treatments and care pathways. In the best case, biobank research increases understanding of preventive care and treatment options.

Collecting and storing new samples requires the donor’s consent. Every sample can provide valuable information for future research, and you can be part of making that possible.
