Labour and delivery

Safe and individual care at every stage of your childbirth.

Childbirth at Oulu University Hospital

The birth of a child is a wonderful and life-changing experience for the whole family. At Oulu University Hospital, we provide safe, high-quality maternity care every day of the week, around the clock. Our professional staff are here to support you throughout your stay and to ensure that you and your baby receive the best possible care.

We meet every mother as an individual, listening to your wishes and respecting your choices. A wide range of birthing options is available to meet different needs and preferences.

If your pregnancy progresses normally, follow-up takes place at your maternity clinic. If complications arise or you have a condition requiring specialised care, Oulu University Hospital is here to provide expert support and treatment.

When coming to give birth, you do not need to call in advance. There is a separate entrance at the hospital for labouring women at ground level as well as from the Kuuraparkki parking garage. Follow the signs for ‘Labour’.

The Stages of Labour

How does labour progress? Below, you can find information about the typical stages of labour, from the first signs to going home after birth. Some mothers may also come by appointment if their pregnancy goes past the due date, for a planned caesarean or induced labour, or for an assessment of the labour method.

We have a few birthing rooms with bathtubs. Warm water helps you relax and relieves pain.
